I usually don’t join photography competitions because I fear and loathe failure, but then I learned that doing this helps me better myself as a photographer. It helps me be more critical of my work and aspire to improve in the future. In 2010 I earned a gold award in wedding photography category for the month of November from the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers (SWPP, swpp.co.uk). It was a most fulfilling achievement.
Recently I entered the Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) competition, but was hard-pressed at deciding which entries to submit. I’d seen all the other entries sent in by other masters, and they were very good — awe-inspiring works based on immensely creative ideas.
Winning a WPPI award is a significant international recognition. It means that your work is among the top of the world, and I’m so proud to say that many Filipino photographers have made their mark in the world. Now I look forward to earn more points next year in different categories (20 points gets you a Master of Photography medal, and I just got my first point). Madami pang kakainin bigas, haha! I also look forward to going to Las Vegas to attend the WPPI convention and learn from the world’s best photographers.
